Ondina Lopez on Raising an Olympic Gold Medalist - #CrestSponsored

A few days ago, I had the privilege of participating in a teleconference with Ondina López, mother of Two-time Olympic gold medalist and bronze medalist Taekwondo fighter Steven López. His mother is extremely proud of his accomplishments and wanted to share with us how important it was to be there as a supportive mother.  This year, 32 year old Steven will be competing in the 80kg division.  Crest & Oral-B Complete have partnered with Steven’s mother, to highlight the importance mom’s support can play in an athlete’s success.

During the interview, Ondina was extremely candid and sincere in her responses.  Some of the questions and the responses she gave really hit home with me.  Here is a summary of some of the questions and her responses to those questions:

Q: How have sports helped better the lives of your children?
A: They learned to be disciplined, responsible, and good citizens.

Q: What type of support did you have for your kids to be their best?
A: Always be available for them in all aspects of life.  Make sure their needs are always met.

Q: What values did you teach your children?
A: Finish what you start and always do the best you can.

Q: Did Taekwondo interfere with your children’s education?
A: School was an integral part of their discipline.  Homework and school were always a priority.  The children were reminded that Taekwondo required a lot.  They had to complete all of their obligations during the week, but the weekends they were free to do what they chose.

Q: How would you like your kids to remember you?
A: That she always gave them all her love and support. And that she taught them how to be respectful.

In this short video she talks about the small things she would do to make sure she did everything possible to help her children succeed.  (The video is in Spanish)

(For those that do not speak, or understand, Spanish she is commenting on the fact that her children practiced several times per day.  She ensured they had cold drinks in the summer to keep them cool and would run the dryer in winter to keep them warm.)

As I reflected on her responses and watched the love and admiration Ondina and Steven share in the video, I think back to myself and my children.  I was able to confirm that a mother’s role in the upbringing of her children is so very critical.  I have three children of my own, ranging from 10 years to 25 years of age.  Although difficult due to the age difference, it has always been important to me to teach my children those values that would create self-sufficient, productive adults.

Ondina also states something that I strongly agree with  – you need to be available for your children at all times and in all aspects of their lives.  I have, and still am, teaching them about responsibility and discipline.  Most importantly, as Ondina states, teaching them to finish what they start and always do their best.  In other words, teach them to never quit!  I am very proud of all three of my children for all of their personal successes, large and small.
